New e-learning module on liver disease

A new e-learning course ‘Liver Smart’, designed for community healthcare professionals supporting patients and clients with liver disease has launched this week. The course has been developed by people with lived experience of liver disease, led by Common Ambition, and Arch GP, Dr Kate Pitt.
Liver disease is rising in prevalence nationally and disproportionately affects people experiencing poverty and marginalised groups. Community healthcare professionals can help to identify liver disease earlier and improve outcomes across the stages of liver disease.

The freely available module includes practical advice and resources to help people to improve their liver health. The course is designed to be multi-disciplinary, and has been improved with feedback from peer workers, dietetics, nursing and medical colleagues in the Brighton & Hove area. The course includes the following topics:
- Sources of information and support for patients.
- Addressing common risk factors (metabolic, alcohol, and hepatitis C)
- Investigating liver health
- Signs and symptoms of liver disease
- Prescribing in liver disease
- Preventing complications and screening
- Supportive and palliative care.
Each section has links to research evidence and clinical guidance, and additional resources.
You can access the ‘Liver Smart’ e-learning module for free here.
This work was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
